Counseling with Individuals

There are as many reasons for engaging in counseling as there are human experiences. Whether it is your first time or you are well acquainted with the process, you are likely to benefit from counseling if:

-You are part of a family (kidding, not kidding)

-You are struggling with the whole adulting thing

-You feel stuck, unable to do things differently

-You feel broken, not good enough

-You feel sad, overwhelmed, or anxious

-You get easily triggered and reactive

-You’re questioning your relationship

-You’re exploring your identity, gender, race, or sexuality

-You’re going through big life changes or losses

-You don’t want to be like your family, church, or culture

-Your past traumas interfere with your present life

-You feel hopeless about the state of the world

-You just want things to be better!

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.” ~Mr. Fred Rogers

Initially we will spend time clarifying your immediate concerns and goals for counseling. Together we’ll explore who you are and how you’ve come to believe and behave the ways that you do, helping you to develop a compassionate understanding of yourself and where you may still need to heal or grow.

It can feel unsettling when you first sit with all that’s there. But we’ll go slow, and I’ll help you build on the strengths and coping skills you already have so that processing feels manageable. It’s important to be able to cope, but ultimately you want more than just to survive–you want to thrive! So the work shifts from past to present, from “why” to “what now”. This is where you begin to meet yourself where you are. Yes, with kindness and understanding, but also with authority and agency. You will learn how to be responsible for yourself and live more in alignment with the values and beliefs that are meaningful to you. You will show up in your life feeling more confident, capable, and grounded in who you are.

I believe counseling is a great gift to yourself. A moment to pause. To breathe. To shed the distractions and defenses and just be real with yourself.  When you slow down, tune in, and listen, all your defensive and demanding parts become quiet. You gently gain access to deeper feelings aching to be healed. You get in touch with precious needs longing to be met. There is an inner trust that grows when the hurt, fear, shame, or sadness can be held with presence and tenderness. There is a strength and maturity that comes from witnessing yourself take action on behalf of your unique truths and needs. This is what it means to be in relationship with Self! Listening to and honoring what is most important to your growth and wellbeing. Being both giver and receiver of the love and respect you deserve.

You are the one you have been waiting for! Show up for yourself.
